Q&A: How do I keep my tile floors and grout clean?

Question by Kelsie: How do I keep my tile floors and grout clean?
Hi all,

I recently bought an old house and the tile and grout look extremely dingy. What is the best way to clean them, and keep them clean? Should I do it myself or should I hire a professional. And if so, can anyone recommend someone in the Bradenton, Florida area?

To do it yourself, go to the local Home epot or Lowes home store and get some tile/grout cleaner. The sales people there will help you find it.
      Follow directions on the package.

First check out this grout cleaning site. Offers many home cleaning solutions that will be milder than the commercial cleaners. Try them first. Work you way toward the harsher cleaners if necessary.

If all fails, call a professional and get an estimate and idea if cleaning is a possibility. Sometimes grout is so bad, it needs to be replaced.
When the grout is clean and bright. Allow it to dry for a couple of days then use a grout sealer. This is a water type product that you sponge on the grout and tiles. It adds a layer of protection so the grout does not discolor from dirt, shoes, spills, etc.
Use 3 coats. Allowing each to dry. Very simple. Goes on and dries quickly and does work.

If the tile or grout are even slightly porous and unsealed, you usually can’t get the gunk back out. You can try some aggressive cleaners like Lysol or ammonia and scrub scrub scrub with a high-pressure power washer, just in case it’s just dirt trapped in floor wax. But more likely its dirt and mold that are well worked into floor. No solution for that short of tear up and replace.

      Grout is such a pain isn’t it…..

I have used a solution of Baking soda and water….with a toothbrush but it only gets some of the dirt up.

The best thing to do is redo the grout and then SEAL it. The sealer seems to keep the grout looking like it’s natural color for much longer.

My bathroom needs to be done right now and I was just starting to think about this.

I might try to do it myself first and if that small area doesn’t go well then I might need to call my tile guy.

You should never clean the grout with a cleaner. That’s what my tile guy said. Just water.

      Chemicals turn the color quicker.

      Good Luck!
